Room Mate Hotel Giulia, Milan

W

e are right in the centre of the city of Milan, a stone’s throw away from the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the summer heat has just started rising from the early hours of the morning. However, the Room Mate Giulia hotel is still a fresh and cool spot.

Opened last March, Room Mate Giulia is the latest venture of world class Spanish hotel chain Room Mate. Elegance is paramount: a boutique hotel with a timeless and informal interior, housed in a historic 19th century building, also a space where time keeping follows a gentle pace (breakfast is served until midday!).

You feel like in someone’s home from the moment you step inside, just like being welcomed by a friend, Giulia. And being inside this hotel, is almost like being on the stage of the Teatro della Scala. What’s more, Room Mate Giulia has Patricia Urquiola’s unique signature style: shades of pink, green and blue are mixed with traditional materials like terracotta tiles from the Lombardy region and designer pieces with industrial and vintage-inspired aesthetics; this welcome us to the home of our new imaginary friend.

Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has paid great attention to every single detail. In every corner, the hotel’s minimalist style is highlighted by a strong feminine touch, from the 85 bedrooms spread over six floors (each bedroom is individually designed) to social and conversational public rooms, and even to a wellness space with sauna and fitness centre.

In the hotel lobby, there’s an extraordinary bookcase filled with books and souvenirs of Milan, plus a curved brick wall (clear reference to the city’s vernacular architecture), which guides you along a corridor with pink marble flooring and large geometric carpets to sofas by Moroso, armchairs by Albini and furniture by Cassina, Glas Italia, Kettal and B&B Italia. What’s more, lighting design, by iconic brand Oluce, includes pieces by Joe Colombo like Coupè 2202 and Coupè 3321 floor lamps, brought out in a new finish which evokes the designer’s customary colour scheme (thanks to Oluce’s bespoke tailoring service), and The Globe pendant lamp.

Room Mate Giulia speaks a sophisticated language, it also includes references to the Lombardy region, Italian aesthetics and Milanese style. Guests will also notice a most characteristic warm and intimate feeling, which will accompanies them for the entire duration of their stay.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Room Mate Giulia is the one for you, especially if you’re looking for somewhere infused in the spirit of Milan. So, if you want to feel the soul of this vibrant eclectic city and feel at home for the whole duration of your trip, then trust in Giulia…
