How is it possible to make your attic apartment in the mountains look contemporary, while preserving the same warmth of an Alpine lodge? The answer lies in this charming attic apartment in Vigo, one of the most cherished treasures of the Dolomites, north east Italy. Both doctors, our couple, decided to spend their free time here, so they created a home which harmoniously brings together the local vernacular tradition with clean modern furniture.

The idyllic Val di Fassa in the Dolomites, Trentino Alto Adige, the most beautiful mountains in Italy
In their forties, our owners have chosen the idyllic Val di Fassa as their home, to enjoy in summer and winter in their limited time off. Plus, it makes the perfect retreat once work is over. They used all available space under the eaves, where there’s a mezzanine floor with a small living room/ library.
Light timber for a not too rustic easy vibe. Under the eaves, bespoke storage lacquered in white. At the centre, the range cooker by Pertinger, which works as a cooker, heater and hot water boiler.
This attic apartment is an open-plan space designed around a central core with a staircase to the floor. High cupboards line the walls around the core, while low-level cupboards line the exterior walls. The space is imperceptibly divided by a glass sliding door, fitted between kitchen and living room/ dining room, which welcomes you as you enter. And around the core, we have kitchen on one side, bedroom on the other and living room/ library on the mezzanine floor.
The kitchen block has nothing on a chef’s kitchen. In the background, a dining table under the dormer window with views over the mountains, and a tiny TV banished to the corner, because here there are better things to see.
The Alea kitchen by Varenna Poliform is customized with precision to fit under the eaves. Made-to-measure storage, which under the dormer windows are comfy benches.
Light colours and partly bleached timber brighten the space up, and a splash of red here and there makes it more vibrant. Plus, right in the centre of the open-plan space, a burner with the blazing hot fire radiates warmth. The modern furniture is strictly functional. Cupboards and bookcases have been customized to use every inch under the eaves, they disappear in plain sight, blending in with the white on the walls. This serves as a backdrop for the period furniture, which our owners have been passionately sourcing from markets and antique dealers.
The bedroom is in one wing of the apartment. The Senza Fine cupboard by Poliform runs the entire length of the apartment, and slimline glass partition divides it into bedroom and bathroom.
