  3. In Treviso, always on holiday on this roof terrace

I

n the old town centre of Treviso, North East Italy, there’s a rooftop apartment with an exotic carefree vibe, which instantly makes us feel as if on holiday. This pitched-roof apartment has a lush terrace with furniture made in Indonesia by local craftsmen, as well as a light-filled open-plan living room with a white resin floor and several contemporary pieces, which sit in the space like modern sculptures. Colours get darker gradually as you approach the bedroom, ushering in the night.

The plants on the terrace enter the home

A seamless flow between indoors and out. The plants on the terrace enter the home, here a Beaucarnea palm (ponytail palm) is waiting to be moved outdoors for the summer.

This beautiful and extremely well cared for home has three owners. First of all, interior designer Carlo Lucchese, also owner of Factory Interni, an extraordinary interior design store in the Veneto countryside, between Treviso and Pordenone. Then, we have Aristotele and Berenice, two extremely devoted Whippets, mid-size greyhounds, whose sole purpose in life is to spend as much time as possible in their owner’s arms.

Carlo had fallen in love with this area of Treviso even before building work had commenced. The first to buy in the building, he chose this roof-top apartment while the design was still underway. Soon after the go-ahead was given to pull down the old warehouse which stood in this plot, Carlo was able to choose internal layout and finishes. For Carlo, the most important aspect was to have a livable roof terrace with enough room for dining table and sofa, where he could ready comfortably while being surrounded by lush greenery, in this way Aristotele and Berenice could also enjoy themselves.

The roof terrace with teak wood dining table and sofa with large cushions, both pieces are bespoke designs. Pay chairs by Dedon and table lamp part of the KTribe series designed by Philippe Starck for Flos.

In the living room, sofas by Flexteam for Factory Interni and a traditional rocking chair next to a modern fireplace.

The light-filled space which faces the terrace includes living room, dining room and kitchen; this single open-plan space is divided by several partitions with no conventional door opening. The open-plan kitchen by Modulnova disappears into the background. The bespoke dining table links-up to the breakfast bar; this forms a friendly space with an elegantly simple informal feel. One of Carlo’s great passions is cooking for his friends and here, he has the right amount of space to do so.

The bespoke dining table in stained teak wood. Diablo pendant lamps by Achille Castiglioni for Flos and recipient of the  Compasso d’Oro Award, a rare find as they have been out of production for some time and so, the owner treasures them like real heirlooms.

In the bedroom quarter, walls in dark shades alternate with white and grey; this creates a more intimate and quiet environment. The bedrooms are decorated with only a scattering of accessories and paintings, like small Russian icons and designer lamps. Similarly, the floor gets darker gradually, you go from the white resin of the living room to the wengé parquet flooring, best suited to the bedrooms.

Left hand-side, the master bedroom with the golden Russian icons. Right hand-side, the guest bedroom visited by the two dogs and in the background, wallpaper by Ralph Lauren. Bed by Flexteam and in the foreground, Onion table lamp by Verpan inspired by one of the many wonders of nature, the modest and essential onion.

The two bathrooms are elegantly decorated with paintings, chandeliers, plants and kinds of accessories rarely found in bathrooms. This give a feeling of relaxation, which encourages you to spend more time.

This is a special apartment for a lover of nature, flowers, beautiful well made things and modern design. Carefree like a holiday and refined like a luxury home. The extraordinary thing of Carlo Lucchese’s apartment is that you could very well be in a faraway land, rather than in the historic centre of a small Venetian town. Carlo was able to give such a unique and charming feel to this top floor apartment and in the not so distant future, we hope to see him busy with new projects.
