bitare Gonzaga 2016 is at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, northern Italy, from the 11th June until the 15th September 2016.This exhibition draws a link between modern design, contemporary art and the past. Abitare Gonzaga 2016 takes place at the Estivale or Rustica, a luxury apartment built during the Renaissance period by Giulio Romano for Frederick II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. Set up like a modern home, Abitare Gonzaga 2016 turns this historical setting into a backdrop for showcasing pieces by Agape, main sponsor of the event.
This exhibition revisits the decorative style favoured by the Gonzaga, namely the princely family that ruled over Mantua during the Renaissance. Each room has a different theme. For example, the Camerino di Orfeo (lit. Orpheus’ chamber) is a sleek bathroom with the ultra-slimline Ell washbasin and Drop bathtub, both by Agape, paired up with Club44 chairs by Agapecasa. The Camera dei Mesi (lit. the chamber of the months) is a modern art gallery, and among the works of art on display we have Eros table and Loico open shelving in Carrara marble. The Sala delle Maschere (lit. the chamber of the masks) is a spacious dining room with sixteen Tre3 chairs and three Incas tables.
Apart from pieces by Agape, there are also some by other key names on the interior design scene like Davide Groppi and Rimadesio, just to name a few. The overall effect is that of a contemporary home, which nonetheless has a unique timeless charm. Past and present go hand in hand; this creates a unique space, both welcoming and sophisticated. Without a doubt, Abitare Gonzaga 2016 has inspired us.
