B&B Italia, bed Charles

| Designbest editorial staff

harles, the bed designed in 1997 by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, is 20 years old, and it still makes us dream exactly as it did all those years ago. Since the nineties, Charles has steadily grown in popularity, helped by an elegant white silhouette and by the fact it’s part of a larger furniture series, developed around a sofa.

Without a doubt, its streamlined feet are what make it feel ultra-modern; this detail brakes the mould of conventional aesthetics, designing a new kind of sophistication, which rebels agains convention. In fact, these iconic “L” shaped feet in brushed aluminium (in a glossy or painted finish) played a crucial role in contemporary design history, as well as determining the great success of the Charles series. We only need to remind you of the matching sofa, an undisputed icon of contemporary Italian style.

Bearing this in mind, how could the Charles bed not be greeted in a similar way. Upholstered in leather or fabric, padding in polyurethane, steel frame and feet in aluminium: the Charles bed is a clear reference to its predecessor (the sofa). Plus, it successfully brings together traditional aesthetics and a distinctly modern vibe.

The Charles bed is now available in two different styles: the first one has a shallow recessed mattress and in the second one, the mattress rests on the bed frame. Both styles are impeccable and with Charles, your bedroom will undoubtedly be welcoming and bang on trend. In fact, you’ll only need a few carefully chosen details (those with a capital “D”), key player will be the Charles bed by Antonio Citterio. This is what dreams are made of!
