ver since the aesthetic sensibility of design landed in the world of heating, there are innumerable examples of compelling solutions where the technological expertise of the sector’s best brands has met the beauty of form. And when the design is done by an engineer who has become a designer (one of the most exciting to boot) together with a company with whom he has already won the Compasso d’Oro, it is truly a pleasure to go and find out what all the fuss is about.

What it is  Step by Step is a designer radiator produced by Tubes.
What makes it special  With refined and timeless elegance, at first sight Step-by-Step appears to be a singular surface with vertical ribs. However, as we get closer it becomes a sculptural object and its ribs expand and contract in an evocative interplay of light and shadow, almost as if it were an oscillating heating fan.
How it is made  Step-by-Step is an aluminum wall radiator divided into elliptical pleated modules. The so-called “flaps” (available in 5 different heights) are grouped in modules of six elements that can be directed towards the right or left and combined (6+6) in one direction or both. The technology with the relevant plugs and valves is completely hidden from view. Step-by-Step is available in a hydraulic (hot water) or electric version in four colors inspired by nature: ivory, brown copper and two grey tones. The body only protrudes 7.8 cm from the wall and its accessories, a towel rail and hook, make it perfect for confined spaces like the bathroom.
Whose idea it is  Step by Step is a project by Alberto Meda, who was born in 1945 and is an industrial designer and mechanical engineering professor at the Polytechnic of Milan, the city where he continues to live and work. Among the world’s most cherished designers, he has collaborated with the most famous brands in international design for over 50 years. Among the countless awards received, he has won 5 Compasso d’Oro, including one for the Origami radiator he designed for Tubes in 2016. With Step-by-Step he won the German Design Award 2019 in the category Excellent Product.
We chose it because…  Step-by-Step is a complex project that comes out surprisingly simple. It is the description of a radiator capable of guaranteeing the highest quality in energy efficiency and aesthetics while taking up the least space. We cannot help but agree with Alberto Meda when he says of Step-by-Step “I like minimalist objects with hidden complexity(…)”.
