aybe you have never heard of the city of Elciego, located in southern Spanish Basque Country, however there are at least two excellent reasons to include it in your future travel plans: wine and the wonderful Hotel Marqués de Riscal designed by Frank O. Gehry.
The wine-making tradition of Elciego dates back to the Middle Ages, however it wasn’t until 1858 that the prestigious Marqués de Riscal winery was established. What’s more, this longstanding tradition doesn’t preclude an innovative spirit, and this is the reason why Ciudad del Vin (which literally translates from Spanish as: wine city) was established in 2006, of which this Hotel is its cathedral.
It will take your breath away at a glance: a mixture of both curved and broken lines stands out among vineyards and historic buildings. Sunbeams reflect on this futurist concoction of glass, timber and steel, producing iridescent colours. Inside the building, legendary designer pieces decorate the 43 rooms and suites, the entrance lobby, the spa, the lounge bar on the top floor and the two restaurants; the first one similar to a traditional bistrôt and the second one, more prestigious than the first, has even received a Michelin star.
If you’d like to invest in this luxury stay, you can choose between different types of accommodation: the Grand Deluxe rooms, with large glass panels and a king-size bed; the Executive Suites, which are just as bright as they are vast, decorated with several gems like a kettle by Porsche; and finally, for the most exacting of customers, the Gehry Suite, 72 square metres of pure design. In any case, you are bound to come across famous designs everywhere you turn: Alvar Aalto, Christian Werner, Verner Panton, B&B and Knoll, are just a few of the names we could cite.
We definitely encourage you to visit Marqués de Riscal for yourselves. Be prepared for the hard task of living a few days surrounded by the best in design, tasting excellent wine, in utmost serenity.
