Hotel Parco dei Principi: five star design

| Designbest editorial staff

he impressive history of the Hotel Parco dei Principi started with a vast plot of land on the cliffs of Sorrento, owned by the order of the Jesuits. At the end of the eighteenth century, The King of Naples purchased this land and gave it as a present to the Count of Siracusa, who then built the Poggio villa. Subsequently, downfall followed by new splendours, when it was bought by a noble Russian family. However, it was abandoned once more until 1962, the year Fernandes, an engineer, following a hunch asked Gio Ponti to build a luxury hotel on the ruins of these historical buildings.

This is how one of the first boutique hotels, designed by an internationally acclaimed architect,  was born. Here, a triumph of different shades of blue is found on the ceramic tiles which clad the walls, the different designer pieces and the sea, which stretches as far as the eyes can see. In 2012, when Hotel Parco dei Principi was restored, the communal areas were enhanced by adding a real exhibition space. This area recounts the story and key players of the life of this hotel; careful consideration was paid to “sacred pieces” designed by Gio Ponti.

Perhaps this hotel is not suitable for all pockets; without doubt you cannot regret having to invest in a stay at the Parco dei Principi. Imagine an evocative journey through galleries dug deep in the rocks, which lead from the hotel to both the private beach and the cliffs with a solarium. Think of a saltwater swimming pool, designed by Gio Ponti and  set in the breathtaking scenery of the botanical gardens. During dinner time, you can have the choice of two different locations: Gio Ponti panoramic restaurant or Poggio Siracusa on the pier of the private beach.

You also cannot fail to appreciated the interior detailing: authentic Italian designer furniture of the ‘50s, which has a restrained and elegant aesthetic. All this, in surprising harmony with the marine landscape, which is referenced by the many decorations and the white and blue pebbles inset in the walls.

Therefore, if you’re real design fanatics and want a chic holiday, look no further: Parco dei Principi is the ultimate holiday destination.
