  4. The Sereno Hotel on Lake Como: a breath of modernity from Patricia Urquiola

The view of Lake Como from the Sereno Hotel lounge.

n an idyllic position at the foot of a rocky cliff, the Sereno Hotel holds true to the serenity its name alludes to. Overlooking the water’s edge on the western bank of the Como arm of the Lario, as Lake Como is also known, it opens with large and small terraces, loggias and tall windows onto the glimmer of placid waters and the greenery of the subalpine peaks that surround it.

This five-star boutique hotel, twenty minutes from Como, was designed by Patricia Urquiola, the Spanish architect and designer who, after having finished her studies in Milan with Achille Castiglioni and worked with Vico Magistretti and Piero Lissoni, went on to conquer the design world. The quality of her work can be perceived in each detail of this fascinating boutique hotel.

The lounge facing the veranda has all the charm of a private living room. On the right, the coppered aluminum tubes that screen off the central stairs.

Built on top of an old stone pier that hosted a since-demolished hotel structure, the main objective of the project was to bring out the true meaning of this location and allow guests to sense the lake’s presence at every moment. This effect was fully achieved thanks to its architectonic concept and highlighted by a modern, elegant and discrete look which is never too flashy or over-the-top—all the furniture of the communal areas and suites are from B&B Italia. The only “sculptural” work which rightly carves itself out a leading role, despite being screened off by a cross-stitching of bronze tubes, is the large central staircase where solid walnut planks are layered one after another forming the steps.

With its 30 suites, the Sereno Hotel maintains exclusivity and, in some cases, is almost private even in common areas. Privacy, sober elegance and stimulating design are the keywords of the atmosphere sought after by Luis Contreras, the Venezuelan entrepreneur and owner of the Sereno Hotels, which includes the not-so-distant Villa Pliniana and Le Sereno St. Barths in the Caribbean.
An example of the latest in new luxury which seeks more natural comfort in harmony with surrounding environment, the Sereno Hotel brings a breath of fresh contemporaneity to the lakeshore.
