9093 by Alessi, the iconic kettle with a bird-shaped whistle, celebrates its 30th birthday. And who hasn’t heard of it before? In fact, 9093 is one of the undisputed icons of twentieth century design (it was designed in 1985 by Michael Graves) and this is such a popular piece, reaching the one and a half million copies sold.
In order to celebrate its birthday, Graves (before his death in March 2015) had thought of a new “gutsy” version: the Tea Rex with a novel dragon-shaped whistle. “Our dragon is a good dragon, it absolutely doesn’t breathe fire and at the most, it might let out some smoke!” explained the designer, who was inspired by the Chinese dragon, a symbol of strength and good luck charm.
And the new Tea Rex greets everyone with cheer “in the years to come, this dragon will protect with pride both your kettle and kitchen!”.
