Goodbye waste: smart moves in the kitchen

February 5, 2022 is the 8th World Food Waste Prevention Day.  Unfortunately, this problem has taken on gigantic proportions over the last few years. All one has to do is consider that each year 67 kg of food per person are thrown out in Italy, for a total of over 5 million tons of wasted food. This useless waste makes a big environmental, social and economic impact: food waste in Italy amounts to around .67% of the GDP, for a total of almost 10 billion euros a year.

According to the Food Waste Index Report 2021, the food that ends up directly ends up in the trash mostly (by over two thirds) comes from our homes. Despite the fact, due to the pandemic, Italians have been able to reduce food waste by 11.47% (around 27 kg per person) over the last few years, home waste continues to be the leading issue. In order to truly solve this problem, the solution must start with our daily actions.

While there are those like the startup Tech FoR Good Phenix who have presented their own waste prevention guidelines, we have decided to put together a list of a few clever accessories. With recycled and green containers, intelligent systems that flag expired food, and “traditional” instruments which help you get the right measurements in a few moves, these will help you conserve food better, save leftovers and apply small and successful food prevention strategies with ease.
