he iconic Lumiere bedside lamp, designed in 1990 by Rodolfo Dordoni, is 25 years old. And the brand Foscarini celebrates this birthday in style with the video-installation Anni Luce: il viaggio di Lumiere attraverso 25 anni di storia (lit. Light Years: Lumiere’s journey through 25 years of history). Anni Luce will be at the Triennale Design Museum, Milan until the 30th April this year.
This exhibition shines a light on the major historical events of the past 25 years. It begins by showing how Lumiere, a lamp with aluminium tripod and glass diffuser, innovated the field of lighting design. In fact, Lumiere was considered extremely ground-breaking when it first came out, an elegant and creative way of reworking a classic concept. What’s more, it paved the road to success for the brand Foscarini.
Curated by Michele Calzavara and Elisa Ossino, this exhibition tells a story made of journeys, sounds and emotions. At the same time, twenty-six screens project images of the most influential personalities, changes in fashion and style, technological advances of the last quarter of a century. An overview of the historical and cultural background swiftly runs past us, giving us a feel for this age.
As expected, there are iconic pieces, displayed like a sort of chronological dance, a handing of the torch if you like. This shows the role they played in our lives, entering our homes and becoming part of the collective imaginary, just like the iconic Lumiere has done.
