Alessi shows in Köln

COVER: Alessi Made in Crusinallo. The Beauty and the Mastery.

A new exhibition honours the iconic brand Alessi: Alessi Made in Crusinallo. The Beauty and the Mastery. Alessi Made in Crusinallo will be at the MAKK, Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Köln, Germany (German for Museum of Applied Art) until the 3rd April 2016.

Step by step, this exhibition retraces the history of the brand. On display are: early tea and coffee sets (in particular, Bombé designed by Carlo Alessi as early as 1945), iconic products which have played a key role in contemporary design (for example, the 9090 espresso coffee maker designed in 1979 by Richard Sapper) and also more recent pieces, like the extremely popular Babyboop vase by Ron Arad (2002), the Dressed line designed in 2012 by Marcel Wanders and the Kaleidos basket designed in 2015 by Naoko Shintani.

There also are sketches, prototypes and seven short films, which show how many historic products came to life and since then, have become true icons in their own right. And it’s definitely worth spending some time taking in the different accounts, anecdotes and stories, key in learning about the life of this brand, which began as far back as 1921 in Omegna, north west Italy.

Furthermore, Alessi Made in Crusinallo is a fresh outlook on this most iconic firm. And it’s worth mentioning that Alessi was first a brass and silver-nickel workshop, complete with forge and rapidly grew to become one of the most prestigious names on the Italian design scene.

Where: Museum für Angewandte Kunst, An der Rechtschule, Köln, Germany

When: ongoing  – 3 April 2016
