alendars to the ready, there’s a new exhibition you need to see: Alexander Girard. A Designer’s Universe. Alexander Girard will be at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, from the 12th March until the 29th January next year. This special exhibition, set up by Raw Edges, celebrates the career of architect and designer Alexander Girard (1907-1993).
This retrospective (the first one of its kind) pays tribute to one of the most eclectic interior designers and textile designers of the twentieth century. Alexander Girard’s distinctive style brings together folk art, decoration and colour. What’s more, he effortlessly moves from graphics to typography, from exhibition design to textile deign, from interior design to furniture design and even product design.
And who doesn’t remember his iconic “LOVE” sign? Or, how about the famous Textiles and Ornamental Arts of India exhibition, which was shown in 1954 at MoMa, New York.
The retrospective includes: textiles, furniture, interior reconstructions, unreleased drawings, documents and objects, which belong to the Vitra Design Museum collection. And there’s also Alexander Girard’s private collection of folk art, built during his travels around South America, India and North Africa. And this results in a fresh new approach to analysing Alexander Girard’s work. Furthermore, it shows us his inclination towards experimenting with new materials, patterns, lines, colours and shapes, as well as the full extent of his explosive creativity.
