ow in its eighth edition, London design and architecture festival Clerkenwell Design Week is back from the 23rd to the 25th May 2017. In a similar fashion to past years, the Clerkernwell design district will come out swinging with the best it has to offer: events, opening parties and installations held in its key galleries and showrooms.
Entirely free of charge, the festival has a rich calendar of events with surprises at every corner. The Beacon is definitely worth a mention, a 7,5m tower inspired by the Tower of Babel, which offers a panoramic view over the city. Beacon towers over the entrance located at Design Fields, one of the three areas which form the central spine of the festival itinerary. And then there’s Buzzijungle by Belgian brand Buzzispace, a multifunctional tubular structure in painted steel with asymmetric tilted floors, which appear to be floating in mid air. A place where you can stop and lie down, work, chat and rest.
Personal interaction is the underlying theme this year. The Clerkenwell route is marked out by a series of mirrored installations by Karndean Designflooring, which have kaleidoscopic projections in constant rotation (this reminds us of images seen through a kaleidoscope). We have pavilion prototypes by young talents and architecture students as well as site specific installations like Order. In fact, especially designed for the Arch of St John, one of the local landmark buildings, Order encourages visitors to mingle, exchanging feelings and sensations.
Clerkenwell is possibly the district with the most architecture practices and design firms in the world; this makes it an extremely sought-after international hub. A must for real design addicts, so you’d better not let it slip away. Without a doubt, the Clerkernwell Design Week is a chance to experience the vibrancy of the design word and meet top designers like: Patricia Urquiola, Tom Dixon, Giulio Cappellini, Daniel Libeskind, Ron Arad, Patrizia Moroso, Erwan Bourollec and Benjamin Hubert.
