lerkenwell Design Week, the annual independent London design festival, is ten years old. From the 21th to the 31st May 2019, CDW kicks-off birthday celebrations with a series of events and site-specific installations, beginning with the inevitable tribute, 10 gigantic, three-metre-high candles that are going to be scattered around the neighbouring area.
With over 100 showrooms and studios, the fair’s tenth edition couldn’t be complete without the top names on the scene (such as Marazzi, Foscarini, Alias, LaPalma, Moroso, Cattelan&Smith, Kvadrat, Ceramiche Piemme, Thonet and Calligaris) that are going to entertain the general public and the professionals in the field with workshops, talks and pop-up events.
Besides, the rich calendar of event includes a vast selection of amusing and diverting experiences that go from design to local history: seven exhibitions (from Design Fields that focuses on contemporary design to an exhibition on emerging designers held in the evocative basement of the House of Detention, from typical British products to those reserved for luxury interiors, from new lighting design to trendy accessories), as well as several street shows that shine a light on Clerkenwell’s past and itineraries that illustrate the history of an area that was once populated by watchmakers and gin distillers.
Unique in its kind, CDW demonstrates its expressive and creative strength once again. In fact, in addition to helping British design make a name for its self, it serves an international stage for emerging, young designers.
Clerkenwell has in fact the highest concentration, per square metre, of architecture and design studios around the world. This year, Clerkenwell Design Week has chosen to celebrate its diverse community and to emphasise the importance of being a young but influential event with a campaign created by the brothers Cai and Kyn (the designers who shaped the first identity for Clerkenwell Design Week in 2010). Besides, it has an entirely new logo that is in fact, ten different logos that revolve around the three consonants CDWs.
