xhibition Tutti Frutti on the career of designer Inga Sempé is at Villa Noailles in Hyères, southern France, from the 30th June until the 24th September 2017. Tutti Frutti is held on the occasion of Design Parade 2017, the design competition that this year is chaired by Inga Sempé herself.
In fact, this French designer has taken over the villa’s old sports grounds (indoor swimming pool, squash court and gym), using 30 of her pieces to illustrate her 15 year-long career. Tutti Frutti is fun and vibrant, in keeping with Inga’s style, who as a matter of fact doesn’t stand neither complacent design nor museum-like displays.
Simple yet poetic, unconventional yet versatile; this exhibition includes conceptual sketches, working models, prototypes and everyday objects which go from carpets to lamps and fabrics. Domestic scenes and evocative installations are in rapid succession, a light narrative where stylistic precision and a pinch of irony draw a homely vibe typical of Inga Sempé’s style.
Tutti Frutti has a highly creative vibe, which plays with a contrast between day-to-day objects and Villa Noailles’ fascinating past, a French modernist building designed in 1923, nowadays a multidisciplinary centre which brings together architecture, design, fashion and photography.
This results in an extremely unique exhibition, which pleasantly takes us to Inga Sempé’s magical and delicate world.
