he retrospective Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty is at the Triennale Design Museum, Milan from the 19th January 2017 until the 19th March of the same year. Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty illustrates the 60-year long career of iconic Milanese architect Mario Bellini; this includes contributions to the fields of design, architecture and exhibition design.
Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty is a sort of sequel to an earlier exhibition titled Mario Bellini: Designer, which opened exactly 30 years ago at MoMa, New York (its permanent collection has 25 pieces by Mario Bellini). What’s more, Mario Bellini. Italian Beauty is a sort of time capsule. In fact, 1987 was a crucial turning point in the designer’s career, when he decided to move from design to architecture to focus on large scale buildings and urban design.
Mario Bellini takes up 1000sqm of the Palazzo d’Arte, and it take us on a quest for beauty: from the Portale to the Galleria, to the Piazza to the four Stanze. Curated by Deyan Sudjic (director of the Design Museum, London), Ermanno Ranzani and Marco Sammicheli; this exhibition pays tribute to Mario Bellini’s eclectic body of work.
Attention is paid both to his small-scale work (Mario Bellini received 8 Compasso d’Oro Awards, as well as having designed a number of iconic products) and his large-scale projects (from convention and exhibition centres to museums, including the Department of Islamic Art at the Musée du Louvre in Paris), a career told through video installations and a display designed by Mario Bellini himself.
The result is a world where magic and creativity come together to design top quality projects; this still manages to amaze us, highlighting the hidden professionalism of such an iconic name.
