he first edition of the Matera Design Weekend will run from the 11th until the 13th December 2015, in the city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, south Italy. Matera Design Weekend is namely a two-day long calendar of events, which revolve around the world of design.
Workshops, dates and fringe events will bring this city to life. In fact, for two days, Matera will become a showcase for Italian and international designers, brands, artisans and established and new emerging retailers.
The main intent of Matera Design Weekend is to engage the general public and bring enthusiasts and passersby in touch with the world of design. This is a thought provoking festival. And it shines a new light on the city of Matera and surrounding region, paying close attention to its architecture, urban design and a number of projects in a variety of other fields.
Matera Design Weekend is held in two different locations: the Cappella Malvinni-Malvezzi of the Palazzo Gattini, right in the historic Sassi neighborhood and Casa Netural, a council house built in 1959 in the modern part of the city. The festival also reaches other areas of Matera (Casa Diva, Area 8, Articolo 21, the Sassi Residence, the hypogeum of the San Giorgio Residence and the Calia Italia showroom).
Furthermore, this festival will attract designers from all over Italy and from a variety of different fields: from urban design to food design, from interior design to pottery design, artisans who work in wicker to mechanical engineering. Matera Design Weekend teaches us about the many different sides of design. What’s more, it views design under a new perspective, namely the unique setting of the city of Matera, a magical place caught somewhere in between past and present.
