n Venice, Ca’ Pesaro pays tribute to Elio Fiorucci’s creative genius with an exhibition that illustrates the history as well as the background of this outstanding Milanese creative talent, passed away in 2015.
Epoca Fiorucci projects us to Elio Fiorucci’s cultured, irreverent and visionary world, beginning in 1967, the year the first Fiorucci store opened in Milan. The people who remember the store in Galleria Passerella, designed by the young sculptress Amalia Del Ponte, remember as well that it was a real cultural shock: Fiorucci shocked the city with its music, the vibrant colours, the unconventional architecture in juxtaposition with the bourgeois boutiques, shaking up the fashion industry and kick-starting a real social and cultural revolution.
Transgressive, irreverent, ironic yet cultured too, Elio Fiorucci’s style is an instant hit with the young crowd, ranging from fashion to art and from design to architecture. We need only consider his group of friends that counted the likes of Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi and Michele De Lucchi, besides international artists such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Madonna and Oliviero Toscani who collaborated with Elio Fiorucci on several projects. And the new brand, represented by the two unmistakable cherubs, rapidly became an international phenomenon: the London store opened in 1975 and the New York one in 1984. Wherever he goes, Elio Fiorucci leaves indelible traces in the collective memory.
Epoca Fiorucci is curated by Gabriella Belli and Aldo Colonetti with Elisabetta Barison, in partnership with Floria Fiorucci and the Fiorucci archive. The exhibition display is designed by Studio Baldessari e Baldessari (artistic and creative consultation services by Franco Marabelli). The exhibition puts on display Elio Fiorucci’s unconventional spirit and we, immersed in the dialogue between products, objects, posters and documents, can relive the golden years of a designer and artist who, reading between the lines of our everyday lives, has been able to bring to us his unmistakable style.
