XXVII Compasso d’Oro ADI 2022: the winners

Development, Sustainability and Responsibility were the key concepts of the Compasso d’Oro 2022, the most prestigious Italian award for industrial design. Founded in 1954, the 27th edition of this well-known and much sought-after prize took place on June 20, 2022 at the ADI Design Museum, the new design museum which opened a year ago in Milan. And with a new location comes new rules. This was the first time that the jury and the preselection of the best project of the years in the running (2020 and 2021) were inspired by a theme.

“The Compasso d’Oro is a privileged player in the complex design system and has a duty to adopt a clear position regarding the future,” explained ADI president Luciano Galimberti. “The theme of Development, Sustainability, and Responsibility at this edition became a retrospective yardstick of the quality of Italian design, but it especially aimed at becoming an inspiration and compass for those in the design system who have and will have project responsibility.”

Standing out among the award-winning projects and prizes, we came across a leather lamp, an app, and a robotic arm. They might seem like heterogeneous winners, but they are all connected by the theme of innovation, sustainability and responsibility. As always, we focused on projects connected to the world of furniture and the home and were won over by the minimalist rigor of the aluminum Plato chair designed by Jasper Morrison for Magis; the Belt strip, a kind of leather belt and LED light created by the Bouroullec brothers for Flos; the convenient Ordine electric induction plate by Fabita (Adriano Design) which can be hung on the wall and furnish the kitchen; the Klipper fabric system by Caimi Brevetti, in which Felicia Arvis was able to capture the sounds between her folds to provide us with a decidedly haute couture piece of décor.

However, the interesting new releases don’t stop there: the jury chaired by Annachiara Sacchi and made up by Mario Cucinella, Stefano Micelli, Cloe Piccoli and Mirko Zardini selected 20 winners of the XXVII Compasso d’Oro ADI from the 292 products in the ADI Design Index,. You can find all of the winners in our gallery, including 12 career Compassi d’Oro and 3 long-seller products: the Ghost armchair by Cini Boeri and Tomu Katayanagi for Fiam Italia (1987), the Minikitchen by Joe Colombo for Boffi (1968) and the Up series by Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia. Plus, there were 25 Honorable Mentions and 3 prizes and 9 certifications for the Targa Giovani (Youth Award).

The exhibition at the ADI Design Museum in Milan can’t be missed with the 221 products of this edition on display until September 11, 2022.
