  4. Dansk, the best of Danish design in the hip area of Copenhagen
| Designbest editorial staff

openhagen, Denmark. Scandinavian design has a new hub, where you can find the latest trends: the area around Istedgade, in the Vesterbro district. The interior design store Dansk made for rooms, was one of the first businesses to move to this road, which starts from the central train station and is almost one kilometre long. This area was first a working class neighbourhood, then a drug trafficking and red-light district. And recently, it underwent a radical transformation becoming the most hip, indie and fashionable area in the Danish capital, with bars, restaurants and multiethnic stores.

2011 was a turning point for Ma-lou and Malene Sofie Westendahl, the two sisters who own this store. In previous years, Ma-lou and Malene Sofie had made a name for themselves, bringing out collections for their fashion label Dansk. By doing so, they introduced Scandinavian fashion to the world, with its strong identity, also coherent and timeless. And this was exactly the same approach they had when they started their new interior design store. Here, the principle “Quality over Quantity” reigns over everything else.

As soon as you enter, you are greeted by a vast and bright space, white and pure and which, in spite of the vast number of products on display, seems to be almost bare. Furniture, lamps, accessories, a selection of posters and books, hi-fi stereos, bags, suitcases and articles of stationery: all of this is displayed without fuss and with enchanting Nordic simplicity. Scandinavian minimalism is clearly defined, yet with a natural aesthetic: a highly distinct functional beauty, though it doesn’t go out of its way to be noticed.

Last year, following the success of Dansk made for rooms, the Westendahl sisters decided to open a second store: Dansk Kitchen. This new store has an industrial feel and sells innovative kitchen accessories, different from the norm.

Denmark is the oldest monarchy in Europe, the nation with the best green policies and according to a study carried out by Unesco, it's also the "happiest country" in the world. Now, even Istedgade, a corner of the beautiful Danish capital, which wasn’t very happy indeed, is heading towards regeneration. And surely, these two Dansk stores are a great contribution;  their top quality products evoke great simplicity and refinement.
