Scalo Milano: the largest shopping district in the world

| Designbest editorial staff

ow the largest shopping district in the world, Scalo Milano City Style has just opened in Locate Triulzi, on the outskirts of the city of Milan. Scalo Milano focuses on three different areas – fashion, food and interior design – but it’s the latter which is its real beating heart; this is the first shopping district in Italy with more designer brands than any other such business around the world. At present, Scalo Milano has 26 different brands, but before the year is out this number will grow to 55, including only the best Made in Italy has to offer: Cassina, Cappellini, Molteni &C, Kartell, B&B Italia, Vitra, Dada, Alessi, Tisettanta and Poltrona Frau, just to name a few.

Housed in an ex-industrial complex, Scalo Milano is a fresh take on a conventional business district: high-ceilinged buildings with facades in glass and steel are constructed right next to each other, surrounded by the natural regional park Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Here, historical references are plentiful, in fact until 2004 this used to be the site of the Saiwa biscuit factory, crown jewel of Italian food production. Now, these 30 thousand sqm are taken up by the Scalo Milano shopping centre, built by Promos and Lonati Group. However, this is not just a place to shop and spend your free time. In fact, there’s also a permanent 100 sqm exhibition centre, run in conjunction with the other art galleries here, and especially designed to house events and shows.

Since it openened on the 27th October 2016, approximately 150.000 people have already visited Scalo Milano City Style. So, we've decided to go and take a look for ourselves; this is the right place to find the perfect Christmas gift.
